"And I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea."
(Revelation 21:1 KJV)
When looking for information about heaven, Our Awesome God's Bible seems to be cryptic. We stumble over word pictures of crowns, streets of gold, thrones, etc. All these images seem to be stumbling blocks or deterrents to our understanding heaven. The images are actually meant to be incentives. The word pictures of palms, crowns, streets of gold, thrones, seas of glass, while literally true, are symbols as used in our Holy Bible to represent heaven.
Joni Eareckson Tada once said, "One purpose of a symbol is to represent in a simple way a more complex action or idea." We need to remember that Our Awesome God often uses symbols to help us become curious about something such as heaven.
If we use the images of heaven given to us in Scripture as symbols, then we will be getting a partial view of heaven, "For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face; …" (1 Corinthians 13:12 KJV). So heaven will appear as a blurred image of what it really is unless we use these symbols as incentives to look deeper into God’s Word.
It is also thought that, since Scripture is always comparing things in heaven to something we know here on earth, maybe heaven is indescribable. That possibly our language cannot come close to allowing we humans to understand what Paul saw in 2 Corinthians 12:2, the prophet Ezekiel in Ezekiel 1:26-28 or John in Revelation. Their descriptions are accurate, although incomplete, but what a wonderful place they describe.
Our Awesome God has prepared for us a new adventure when we get to heaven. Join us on 6/23/16 for the next discussion on heaven called: #2 NEW Everything? Meanwhile, read the Book of Revelation and John's description of heaven. Pray to walk a little closer to Our Awesome God.
