"When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judea flee to the mountains:"
(Matthew 24:15-16 KJV)
Our Awesome God had His Biblical writers to write only seven Bible passages referring to what is called the "abomination of desolation". Three are in the Old Testament Book of Daniel, three are quotes of Jesus in the gospels and one is in Revelation. Other than the "future," the time of the event is not given and none of them give a clear description. Taken together, however, we can assemble some of the circumstances and certain actions that will take place.
First of all, Our Awesome God had the one writer state that the location clearly would be the Temple in Jerusalem. It is in a time of conquest when a foreign army surrounds the city. The actual event is the installation of an idol in the temple by the conquering commander who requires it to be worshipped as our God was. One event that fits the facts has already occurred. Antiochus IV Epiphanes conquered Jerusalem in 167 BC and set up an image of Zeus, along with an alter, in the temple. This may have been the fulfillment of one of Daniel's prophecies but it obviously is not the event of Jesus' warning.
Revelation 13:14-15 of our Holy Bible describes an event in the middle of the tribulation period, which is also consistent with all the prophesies. The "False Prophet" will set up an image of the "Beast" or Antichrist in the rebuilt temple and require its worship as a god on pain of death.
"The 'Abomination of Desolation' Identified at Last (by 7 Clues)" http://www.escapeallthesethings.com/abomination-desolation.htm, a paper by Tim McHyde, uses these seven scriptures and a few others to give us a basis for understanding and reasons for not believing other theories which have been offered over the years.
We need to know what these Bible Scriptures are saying and realize that, if you are a Christian, you won't go through the Tribulation Period. But read Tim McHyde's paper on the "Abomination of Desolation" referenced above because it will be a Terrible Time to live on earth.
If you are a Christian who has strayed away from Our Awesome God or someone who has never been a Christian or a person who needs to help minister to others, join us at Living Word Baptist Church on Sunday at 9:30 AM for Bible Study and at 10:30 AM for Worship Service. At 6:00 PM we have a Bible Study with AWANA for children (September through May) until 7:30 PM. On Wednesdays, we meet at 7:00 PM for Prayer Requests, and a Bible Study follows until 8:00 PM. We welcome all people and love them!
