"Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came."
(Genesis 12:1, 5 KJV)
Abraham (Abram) was born in Chaldea (present day Iraq) in the city of Ur. Ur was one of the cities in the "Cradle of Civilization", an important city. Abraham's father, Terah, traveled 500 miles north to Haran (now southeast Turkey) with part of his family and stayed there until his death. But when God called Abraham, he moved 400 miles south to the land of Canaan and lived there most of the rest of his days. If we look at Abraham's family we see the following; Terah, his father, was descended from Noah through his son, Shem. Abraham's brothers were Nahor and Haran. Haran, the father of Lot (Abraham's nephew) had died in Ur, but Nahor's death is not mentioned in the Bible. Sarah, Abraham's wife, was his half sister through Terah.
The greatest test of Abraham came when God commanded him to sacrifice Isaac, his son of promise. Despite the grief and horror that he must have been experiencing, Abraham was actually about to go through with it before being stopped by Our Awesome God (the event occurred on what was then barren Mount Moriah). This lesson of obedience and faith was one of many that Abraham learned.
After Sarah died, Abraham married Keturah who gave him six sons. Abraham's first sons were Ishmael and Isaac, but Keturah gave him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah (Genesis 25:1, 2 KJV).
One crucial lesson we learn from Abraham is that God can and will use us in spite of our weaknesses. Our Awesome God will even stand by us and rescue us from our foolish mistakes. The Lord is greatly pleased by our faith and willingness to obey him. Like most of us, Abraham came to the full realization of God's purpose and promise only over a long period of time and through a process of revelation. Thus, we learn from him that God's calling will usually come to us in stages.
Come join us in our church. There is always a need for Christian teachers and new ideas in presenting Our Awesome God to others. We are a church that preaches and teaches that Jesus Christ died for you and took your sins upon Himself and arose the third day and is now sitting by God, interceding for you when you sin. Every Sunday at 9:30 AM, we have small group Bible Studies and at 10:30 AM, we meet in the sanctuary for Worship Service. We have AWANA for children and Bible Study groups at 6:00 PM on Sunday.
