"But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy."
(1 Peter 1:15-16 KJV)
The definition of the word Holy found in Webster's Dictionary says, "1. Dedicated to religious use; belonging to or coming from God. 2. spiritually perfect or pure; untainted by evil or sin; sinless; saintly." Sacred refers to that which is set apart as holy or is dedicated to some exalted purpose.
Our God is Awesome and He is holy in all He says and in all He does. He wants us to be holy like Himself, and He gave us Jesus Christ as our example. So this is the aim for all Christians: our target or goal is to become Christ-like. Are we focused on being more Christ-like?
Biblical holiness is the state of the heart in devotion to Our Awesome God and which controls the believer's life and directs him to "Abstain from all appearance of evil." (1 Thessalonians 5:22 KJV) We need to know without doubt or confusion what it means to be holy! Being Holy is an attitude of the heart and mind and action. One does not become holy by looking a certain way, by dressing up a certain way, by their actions or by their words. The only way to achieve holiness is through salvation in Jesus Christ followed by repentance and confession. (1 John 1:9) We cannot lose our salvation but we can certainly lose our holiness.
When being holy is discussed, we need to remember there is a difference between "doing holy" and being holy. In order to do something holy, you must precede it by being holy. It is good to obtain a holy heart and live a holy life. Then you can think about actually doing something holy. We must be Christ-like if we want to be holy. You don't become Christ-like and holy instantly, it takes some time. It takes effort with forgivness from God to be "untainted by evil or sin."
Our Awesome God also wants us to want to be Christ-like and holy. He (God) wants us to decide what we want to do, and therefore, God will not force anything on us. God gives us the right to decide whether we will live in heaven or hell for eternity (whether we will be holy or not). But remember, you are deciding for eternity in heaven or hell. This is a very important decision and it is a decision of the heart to be obedient and follow Jesus Christ to be holy!
The best decisions are made when people have knowledge concerning the subject. The subject is Our Awesome God and being holy for Him. Join us at LWBC to learn with us as we teach and preach from the Holy Bible about how to be a Christian according to God's Word, to live a Christian life and tell others about Jesus Christ.
