"And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there."
(Genesis 11:31 KJV)
Haran was a city of western Asia that had many names. It was called Haran when Abram (Abraham) lived there. It was known as "the city of Nahor" (Genesis 24:10) when Abraham sent his servant to find Isaac a wife. The Greeks and Romans knew it as Carrae. Jacob stayed here when he worked for Laban.
Haran stood near the Belik River, about 70 miles from where the Belik flows into the Euphrates River in Upper Mesopotamia. This makes it about 600 miles northwest of Ur. The route of Abram's journey from Ur to Canaan is shown on the map above. The three major caravan routes, south, east and west, met at Haran, making it a place where nations brought in their goods, cultures and religions.
It is not clear when Haran became the center for the worship of the moon god, Sin, but it was there in ancient times. Shalmaneser II built a temple for the moon god. Though the temple was destroyed several times over the years, it was lavishly rebuilt each time. So the worship of Sin continued until, at least, the 13th century when the Mongols destroyed the last known temple.
Our Awesome God allows such things to occur to show and teach us that false religions will always fail. We need to avoid being attracted to what seems to be the right thing just because everyone is doing it. Cults are prevalent today in our society but God removed Abraham from such people and, if we let Him, He will remove us too. Don't get involved in a group that does not worship Our Awesome God in the way His Holy Bible says He wants to be worshipped. Our God remains the same in His plans, His love and the Way of Salvation since the beginning of His time. He loves you! Read His Bible and pray to Him.
