"And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there."
(Genesis 11:31 KJV)
Abraham, Our Awesome God's chosen man, once lived in Ur of Mesopotamia with his family. What do we know about ancient Ur? What we know is that ancient Ur is being explored in a Tel in Iraq. Once a coastal city near the mouth of the Euphrates River on the Persian Gulf, the city of Ur is now well inland, south of the Euphrates River on its right bank. Because the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers flooded many times with wind and heavy erosion, the Persian Gulf coast moved away from the city away and eventually to its present location.
The famous Ziggurat of Ur is located here. The city-state of Ur was a growing city in the fourth millennium BC and in the third millennium BC (3800 BC), the city was described as a city-state with a king. Cuneiform tablets are plentiful and described the business of the city-state and the business of the kings. This city-state had the best of everything that archeology has so far has found of this time period in technology. In fact, Ur was the most centralized bureaucratic state so far found in the ancient world of this time. The other fact that testifies to Ur's importance is the amazing amount of wealth that was buried in kings' tombs here and from where these jewels and things had to come. Places like Asia Minor, Iran and India. They were very rich, even during the Early Bronze Age. They belonged at this time to the empire of Sumer. Around 2047 to 2030 BC a king named Ur-Nammu came to rule and the people developed an irrigation system, a ziggurat was built, two-story houses with 12 and 13 rooms were built with plastered walls and the king wrote a code of laws 300 years before Hammurabi did. This was the city of Ur where Abraham was probably born and grew up. Our Awesome God chose well when He chose Abraham but He always chooses well for He knows what is best. Abraham was wealthy and he chose to follow God and wander the desert. He knew God!
