"And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold."
(Genesis 13:2 KJV)
"And he said, I am Abraham's servant. And the Lord hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses."
(Genesis 24:34-35 KJV)
"In Israel, the measure of a person's wealth consisted mostly of flocks, herds and slaves." From, "Acquiring Wealth in the Ancient Near East," by Claude F. Mariottini for the Biblical Illustrator, Summer 2013 edition, page 12. Our Awesome God didn't provide minted coins or printed currency. Riches weren't measured in dollars or rubles but were measured by what they owned. "Abraham was a rich man because he had many 'sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female slaves, and camels and donkeys.' (Genesis 24:35 NASB). Esau took his cattle and livestock and moved away from his brother Jacob because their wealth was too great for them to live together (Genesis 36:6-8 NASB). Job had seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred donkeys, and many servants (Job 1:3 KJV).
“To preserve and protect their wealth, people needed a large retinue. Job had ‘a very large number of servants’ (Job 1:3 NASB). Abraham had 318 men born in his house (Genesis 14:14 NASB). These men, who probably were free-born servants and slaves working for Abraham. had fathers and mothers, wives and children. Thus Abraham's retinue possibly numbered more than one thousand people..." Excerpted from ibid.
So the patriarchs had riches but owned no land. Our Awesome God had promised He would give their descendants the rich and fertile land of Canaan for the large herds and flocks He would also give them. Two hundred fifty years later, these people were ready to settle down and serve God. But after they got their land, they never became, as He wanted, His priests for the world of unbelievers.
In America, we are all rich by the world's standards. If we are Christians why aren't we doing more to tell the world about Our Awesome God? We should be telling other nations and each other about our God, not doing less to further His Kingdom every year. Our spiritual and financial riches become less every year and we too may disappear as Israel did from 70 AD until 1948 AD. Our purpose is to tell the world about Jesus Christ's salvation.
