"Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:" (Colossians 3:5 KJV)
People, throughout history, have vainly placed their trust in idols or gods. Here are some that made me laugh and then cry over how silly people can be. The Greeks were known to sacrifice an ox to the god of the flies. The Egyptians worshipped several insects. The Phoenicians chained the images of their idols to their altars so their gods would not fly away. Idol worshippers in Rome made charms out of the intestines of sheep. Even Plato, the father of philosophy, thought the stars needed pastures to get their food. But Our Awesome God said, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" (Exodus 20:3 KJV).
Why do we worship idols? 1). Because we want a convenient religion. We want a god who comes to us on our own terms. 2). We worship them because we want to be liked. Or, to say it in a different way, we secretly desire to be approved more by people than be approved by God. 3). This is key. We worship them because we want to have a religion that we can control. We can put this idol in charge of what we want and tell him what to do and if we don't like what he does (nothing) we can get rid of him.
Our Awesome God is different. He knows everything and He can do everything but sin. But there is no controlling God. There is no getting rid of God. Even if we ignore Him, He is still there. If it is wrong, it is a sin. There is no way to bribe God or to ignore Him so He will go away. God created wisdom, knowledge, justice and love - everything. Notice that you don't just forget about Him unless you wish to reside in Satan's home. Don't waste your time and energy on something that cannot help you but can cause you to lose your home in heaven. Believe in Our Awesome God! He created all things!
Join a church (if you haven't already) that prays often and loves Our Awesome God. That believes His Son, Jesus Christ, died for you and took your sins upon Himself to the grave and arose the third day to sit by God, interceding for you when you sin. Praise the Lord!
Come join us as we work in Our Awesome God's vineyard, telling others about His story, Jesus Christ's Salvation, and our eternal home with Him, trying to help them to understand Our Creator better. Our church starts with small groups on Sunday at 9:30 AM and a Worship Service at 10:30 AM. On Sunday evening at 6:00 PM, a Bible Study meets for an hour along with a program for children called AWANA which goes until 7:30 PM (September through May). We have a Prayer Meeting and Bible Study that meets at 7:00 PM on Wednesday. We love visitors because they soon become friends!
"And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made."
(1 Kings 18:26 KJV)
Baal was the lord of the Canaanite religion and was seen in the thunderstorms. This was one of the main religions of Canaan that Our Awesome God did not want His people involved in. Baal worship in Canaan revolved around two themes that represented the conception of Baal his worshipers held. Baal was both the sun-god and storm-god. He was worshiped as sun-god when the people wished to express thanks and gratitude for light, warmth and fertility. Worship of Baal as storm-god took place to appease the destructive nature of Baal, seen in the droughts and storms that devastated the vegetation of the worshipers. The efforts to appease Baal whenever adverse conditions prevailed culminated in the sacrifice of human beings, usually the firstborn of the one offering the sacrifice. The victims were burnt alive, a practice in the Old Testament termed, “to pass through the fire” (2 Kings 16:3; 2 Kings 21:6 ). Baal worship practice was as diverse as the communities in which he was worshiped.
Baal worship was well established in early Canaan and was always infiltrating the Israelite worship of Our Awesome God, as God knew it would. Again, if the Israelites would have killed or driven out all the inhabitants of the cities of Canaan until none was left as God told them to do, they would not have married their women nor have been enticed into worshipping Baal.
Today, God's people can be pulled away from the worship of Our Awesome God by cults that worship idols or their pride in their own works to get to heaven. Idols now are more than just statues or paintings. Idols include anything more important to you than worshipping Our Awesome God and His son, Jesus Christ. Do you have an idol or cult you worship? Consider what God did to the worship of Baal in 1 Kings 18 (KJV). It is extinct as a formal religion today but most of the features are still practiced in our world. Learn more about Our Awesome God by reading His Holy Bible, praying to Him and worshipping in a church which preaches and teaches the Holy Bible. Join us at LWBC every Sunday at 9:30 AM, we have small group Bible Studies and at 10:30 AM, we meet in the sanctuary for Worship Service. Sunday evening at 6:00 PM we have Bible Study along with AWANA for children until 7:30 PM. Our programs include Home Bible Studies and a Wednesday Prayer Meeting but are varied as we teach and preach from Our Awesome God's Holy Bible. We love visitors and practice the "love one another" commandment to all.
"Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."
(2 Corinthians 3:17 KJV)
"Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God."
(Romans 8:21 KJV)
Independence Day is regarded as the birthday of the United States as a free and independent nation. Most Americans simply call it the "Fourth of July," on which date it always falls. The holiday recalls the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. At that time, the people of the 13 British colonies located along the eastern coast of what is now the United States were involved in a war over what they considered unjust treatment by the king and parliament in Britain. The war began in 1775. As the war continued, the colonists realized that they were fighting not just for better treatment; they were really fighting for freedom from England's rule. The Declaration of Independence, signed by leaders from the colonies, stated this clearly, and for the first time in an official document the colonies were referred to as the United States of America. This nation was to be founded on "freedoms." One was the freedom to worship God.
Our Awesome God knew that, like the Israelites in Hosea's time, we would have a choice to make about worshipping God or idols. Our idols are more sophisticated than the carved images of Hosea's Israel. Our government has already installed the religion of science in our public schools. Our people are abandoning God for the religions of wealth, entertainment and technology. We as Americans are no longer considered a Christian Nation but we have become a missionary field for Christians from nations that we once evangelized.
Our Awesome God blesses all people because they are all His creation, but the Christian, who has a special responsibility, gets a special blessing. Are you a Christian who believes in God and His precious Son whom He sent to earth to redeem you from your sins on a cruel cross and that same Jesus Christ arose from the grave after three days and now sits at the right hand of His Father in heaven? If so, you will soon, if not now, be needed by your nation as a representative of God.
On this holiday we celebrate freedom and remind others to be free Godly citizens. We invite you to our church services on Sunday morning (9:30 AM) and evening (6:00 PM) for Bible Study along with AWANA for children which goes until 7:30 PM, and Wednesday evening (7:00 PM) for Prayer Meeting. When you come, ask about the home Bible studies during the week and the choir and Prayer Team. We love visitors and would enjoy meeting you and telling you about Our Awesome God!
