"And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the Lord, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him...But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the Lord : and be sure your sin will find you out."
(Numbers 32:21, 23 KJV)
The book of Numbers in our Holy Bible relates the victories that the Lord God had given Joshua and the Israelites as Moses led them across the land toward Canaan. After Moses died, God told Joshua to be of "good courage" and do as God told him. So they crossed the Jordan River into Canaan and they took Jericho, a large fortified city. Then they came to a little city called Ai who had a small army and Joshua was soundly defeated. God had assured Joshua that, if they kept God's commandments, Our Awesome God would be with them and they would win. What went wrong?
The children of Israel had a small hidden problem (Joshua 7:1). The problem became noticeable when Joshua sent 3,000 troops against the little city of Ai. Although this should have been enough to easily defeat Ai's small army, the Israelites fled before them. Joshua had no idea why this happened. Then Our Awesome God revealed that a man named Achan had taken an "accursed thing" from the sacking of Jericho and hidden it in his tent (Joshua 7:11). Only after the small hidden problem was found and taken care of could Israel go on to win the Promised Land.
We need to remember, small hidden problems must be brought to the surface and dealt with because of the damage and consequences they cause. Our Awesome God knows that we did wrong and we need to take care of the hidden problem before we go on. Do you have those "small problems" in your life? The "hidden problems" may consist of cursing aloud or in your thoughts, it may be taking things that don't belong to you, it may be pride, it could be envy, etc. but check what you think and do with what God wants, then change anything He would not want. Small "hidden things" can grow or just may be a big problem with God. All sins are large to God.

" And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth."
(Genesis 11:3-4 KJV)
The archeological finds of the Near East tell a story of man's slow advancement in knowledge as Our Awesome God met their needs one at a time. As the need for something became apparent God's helping Hand allowed man to look for and find an answer. God was there to help man when the need was great but we have no idea on how long it took to discover each step toward the creation of something new. Archeology continues to make discoveries of different objects.
The Cradle of Civilization was in Mesopotamia where the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers have a very fertile valley that caused people to congregate before there were cities. These people slowly grouped together over time to protect their possessions and their lives from other smaller bands of people. Cities were formed around the fertile rivers and were fortified. Traders came with goods from other places to water and feed their livestock near these rivers. They traded with the people in these cities such as Ararat and Babylon. The Babylonians liked trading so they increased the wheat, flax, fruit and vegetables they grew so they could sell the extra. Soon they needed larger buildings to store the produce so they invented bricks, buildings and wheels. The Babylonians invented an irrigation system for those crops that grew a long way away from the river. Our Awesome God created man, all the plants and animals and man's brain and monitored his progress through the ages, helping him invent.
The Hand of God has always been and always will be on man, helping him with all things that keep him living. Man needs to put his pride aside and realize he can do nothing without God. We all need to realize that Our Awesome God created this complete world which includes our minds and give Him the glory for His inventions and ideas.
We invite you to our church services on Sunday morning (9:30 AM) and Worship Service at (10:30 AM) Then again Sunday evening (6:00 PM) for Bible Study along with AWANA for children going until 7:30 PM. Wednesday evening (7:00 PM) there is Prayer Meeting and Bible Study. When you come, ask about the choir and Prayer Team. We love visitors and would enjoy meeting you and telling you about Our Awesome God!
"Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."
(Proverbs 16:18 KJV)
"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man."
(Ecclesiastes 12:13 KJV)
Our Awesome God says many things about human pride. What is Pride? The Daniel Webster’ Dictionary provides six definitions. Let's look at three which show what we are looking for: First, "it is the quality or state of being proud, as in inordinate self-esteem or conceit, or a reasonable or justifiable self-respect or delight or elation arising from some act, possession, or relationship" (such as parental pride). Second, "pride is also defined as proud or disdainful behavior or treatment". A third definition is, "an ostentatious display."
Pride does many things to those who have it. But the worst thing it does is it shifts the focus from Our Awesome God to you. When pride comes in, you want all the attention on you and not on God. You really want everything to revolve around you, and you become self centered, abandoning your usual loving, Christian self.
You may condemn pride in someone else but usually there is something that will subtly cause you to become prideful. Possibly it is a job you felt you should have. It could be someone cutting in front of you in a long line. It might be a car poking a long ahead of you when you are already late. Or possibly just the injustice you may feel when someone has taken your reserved seat on an airplane or at a ball game. Are you proud of yourself for winning a game? Who made you?
Our Awesome God hates to see this happen to His people. God says, "The Lord will destroy the house of the proud..." Proverbs 15:25 KJV. Pride can creep in, and before you know it, you have forgotten all you have learned in God's Holy Bible. Don't let it take you over. The focus and reason for everything is God, who deserves all the praise, not us, for He creates and we do not. Keep your focus on Our Awesome God! Pride keeps you from admitting God did it through me. Not just me.
Learn more about Our Awesome God by reading His Holy Bible, praying to Him and worshipping in a church which preaches and teaches the Holy Bible. Join us at Living Word Baptist Church as we pray and worship Him this Sunday at 9:30 AM for Bible Study and 10:30 AM for worship Service then again at 6:00 PM for Bible Study along with AWANA for children until 7:30 PM. On Wednesdays, we meet at 7:00 PM for Prayer Requests and Bible Study. First, it is time that you should know and love Our Awesome God as your creator and Savior. We can show you how from the Word of God and we love visitors.
And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth ... And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do ... Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth."
(Genesis 11:4, 6, 9 KJV)
The Tower of Babel did in fact exist: it was a seven-stage ziggurat (stepped pyramid) with a temple to the god Marduk at the top. It was called Etemenanki, or 'the temple of the platform between heaven and earth', and was built in the city of Babylon sometime around 2300 BC, as near as archeologist, Biblical historians, and writings of that period can ascertain. Putting together facts from the ancient writings and the conclusions of these experts, we can start to build a picture of what could have happened.
About 100 years after the Flood, Nimrod (Nimrod was a son of Cush. Read Genesis 10:8) started building a city, which was later called Babylon, to rule over. He was a "mighty hunter" of men and was known as ruthless and wanted to "make a name" for himself. Nimrod set up a god he called Marduk (which was himself) as the city god and started building a ziggurat (the tower of Babel) to reach up to heaven and make man equal to god. It got 6 stories high with no chambers before Our Awesome God intervened.
Our Awesome God was indignant because of Babylon's arrogance and pride and He confused their language so they would not understand each other. God confused the people by splitting them up into seventy different nations and tribes, each with a language of its own, and dispersing them throughout the world (hence the name Babel, meaning "confusion"). Linguists and Bible historians say that this story of confused languages can be found in the literature of over 300 countries. Our Awesome God will not tolerate arrogance and pride in man. Read your Holy Bible in Genesis 11.
We invite you to our church services on Sunday morning (9:30 AM) and evening (6:00 PM) for Bible Study along with AWANA for children which goes until 7:30 PM, and Wednesday evening (7:00 PM) for Prayer Meeting. When you come, ask about the home Bible studies during the week and the choir and Prayer Team. We love visitors and would enjoy meeting you and telling you about Our Awesome God!
"Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee. Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of musick brought before him: and his sleep went from him. Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions."
(Daniel 6:16-19 KJV)
Read all of chapter 6 of Daniel. The story of Daniel in the Lion's Den is usually seen as a story that shows Daniel's love and obedience to Our Awesome God, even with the threat of death. Or it is used to show what God can do. Both renditions are true but, like most stories in the Bible, there are other applications to this story.
What happened to King Darius? He was tricked, possibly because of his pride, by advisors (princes), who were jealous of Daniel. Tricked into signing a decree that would send a person to his death (Daniel 6:6-9). Darius thought highly of Daniel (Daniel 6:2-3) and had been considering making him in charge of the realm over the princes and presidents. This, of course, is what made the same princes and presidents decide to have Darius kill Daniel legally.
It was an effective plan but it was evil and against Our Awesome God's purposes so it didn't thrive. In verses 6:13-14 of Daniel, King Darius realizes that he has signed a paper to kill a man whom he likes, is his best advisor, and is loyal to him. He immediately starts looking for a way around this decree but cannot find one. (His pride in being worshipped has consequences.) The presidents and princes almost gloat aloud to the king in verse 15 which later results in their own death warrant from the King Darius.
Then King Darius turns to Our Awesome God. The king, returns to his palace after putting Daniel in with the lions, stays awake all night and fasts for Daniel. When Daniel walks out unharmed, King Darius proclaims to his world that Daniel's God is a true and living God (Daniel 6:23-25). Thus God's power and love is shown to the largest empire of the world at that time. Read your Bible and see what you can find!

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."
(Romans 12:2 KJV)
"And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom ye fight."
(Joshua 10:25 KJV)
Read the Our Awesome God's Holy Scripture above and especially Romans 12:2 carefully. It would seem that, according to this Scripture, we are to be in the world but not like the world. We are to be different. Not prideful or envious. Why? Because these forces that think they control the World (or earth) hate or battle with God because of pride and envy.
We, as Christians, are Our Awesome God’s children and the earth is God's. Thus, if the world is in conflict with God, the world is also in conflict with us. A big part of our Spiritual Battles is the Worldly or Earthly Battles we face because we are Christians and need to defend our faith. Remember Joshua in 10:25 as he told them that God would fight for them.
The prayer of Jesus to Our Awesome God in John 17:14-26 expresses the heart of Jesus since He knows the battles that we will and do face in this world. We are not called to be a part of the world, we are sent in to the world to be a witness of Jesus Christ. This is a miraculous calling and it takes the miracle of the Holy Spirit living in us to fulfill it and to remember God has won the real battle.
It also takes discernment to know the ways of Our Awesome God and the ways of the world. Because we are born into this world, we naturally think according to it. We have to be transformed to understand God’s ways instead (Romans 12:3). The battles here on earth are becoming more frequent and are becoming more intense when a person decides to accept Jesus as their Savior, the enemy will then attack from all directions. He will use circumstances, events, people, things and even doubt in a new Christian's mind to steal his heart back to his old ways.
When we are made aware of the world's influences and how they are in contrast to God's ways, we must then learn how to operate in the world as a true follower of God. It is one thing to be naive to the world's deceptions but once the truth is revealed, we have a responsibility to obey Our Awesome God's directions for us. Tomorrow the Our Awesome God series will include "#3 The Inner Battle."
