"And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,"
(Acts 8:27 KJV)
Many of we Christians have heard about the Ethiopian Eunuch that Phillip preached to at the Holy Spirit's urging in Acts 8, but few, if any, of us have looked into the background of this incident. This is the first recorded full blood gentile conversion to Christianity and he was probably a man of color from or near the African Court of Axum in eastern Africa. Our Awesome God had a purpose and let's see if we can guess it. Why him? The incident never gives his name so his name wasn't important to God's purpose but he had influence in his area. Note that, historically, Axum was the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as its national religion.
This man most likely traveled from a particular Nubian kingdom that had a dark complexion population south of Egypt in what is now called Sudan. "Candace" was a dynastic title given to the Queen of this Nubian Empire and has been found in Greco-Roman Letters to this kingdom. The Queen mother was the ruler. North of Axum, this was a wealthy kingdom which would have kept the "Ethiopian Eunuch" treasurer very busy, having lucrative trade ties between Axum and nations to the north, especially in the Roman Empire. (Romans liked peacocks and African treasures to decorate their houses.)
"Roman wealth" has been found in excavations in the city of Meroe, Sudan (ancient capital city of "Candace") and further south a bust of Caesar was found in Tanzania. But there certainly were not many Ethiopian delegations around. When the Eunuch entered Jerusalem, where he went to worship the Jewish God, he was probably known as a Gentile "God-fearer" but after Phillip preached to and baptized him, he was a Christian. He then went back to a country where he was an important man and spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. Was this Our Awesome God's purpose?
Come join us in our church as we become more active in changing lives and presenting the gospel of Jesus Christ to others even as Phillip did. We always need Christian teachers and new ideas in presenting Our Awesome God to others. We are a church that preaches and teaches that Jesus Christ died for you and took your sins upon Himself and arose the third day and is now sitting by God, interceding for you when you sin. May God bless you more today than yesterday!

"Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants. For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick."
(Philippians 2:25, 26 KJV)
Paul wrote a letter that became part of Our Awesome God's Bible from his Roman prison about a Greek convert to the Christian faith named Epaphroditus. He was a fellow worker with Paul who had been very ill. Epaphroditus, as far as we know, was not a preacher or a deacon and he never performed a miracle. But the light his life cast still shines centuries later in the Holy Bible.
When thinking about good Christian character, we should think about characteristics such compassion, courage, discipline, endurance, faithfulness, forgiveness, generosity, grace, holiness, hope, humility, justice, love, mercy, obedience, repentance, sacrifice, service, trust, truth, wisdom, prayer and contentment. Are these words descriptive of the life you live? They describe the life that Epaphroditus lived. He modeled a life that exemplified brotherhood, a work ethic, spiritual endurance and service for Our Awesome God's people to follow.
The Christian characteristics that are seen by others in your life are very important to those around you and should include qualities such as love, compassion, discipline, faithfulness, truth, wisdom, and obedience. These are some of the characteristics Our Awesome God is slowly teaching you. What characteristics would Paul have used to describe your life?
How are your characteristics being seen by others around you? Maybe you have few or no real Christian characteristics because you need Jesus Christ and His example in your life as Epaphroditus had. If so, come to our church and learn how to become a child of God. Our Awesome God helps His children develop these characteristics as they learn more about Him while traveling through life.
It isn't easy to live life here on earth because Our Awesome God uses most things we do, good or bad, as an area for teaching us to use Jesus Christ as our example to follow. But eternity in heaven is worth it!
Join us at Living Word Baptist Church as we pray and worship Him this Sunday at 9:30 AM for Bible Study and 10:30 AM for worship Service. Sunday evening at 6:00 PM we have Bible Study along with a children's program called AWANA which goes until 7:30 PM. On Wednesdays, we meet at 7:00 PM for Prayer Requests and Bible Study. First, it is time that you should know and love Our Awesome God as your creator and Savior. We can show you how from the Word of God and we love visitors.
