"And the name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz: and the name of the captain of his host was Abner, the son of Ner,"
(1 Samuel 14:50 KJV)
In the Bible the meaning of the name Abner is: Father is light, or father of light. The Old Testament Abner was Saul's cousin and army commander, ambitious and a clever strategist. He was the person who asked about David after his battle with the giant, Goliath, and who later introduced David to King Saul (1 Samuel 17:55-58). Abner was with the guard protecting Saul when David entered the camp of the king while everyone was asleep (1 Samuel 26:5-7).
After the death of Saul and his three sons in a battle with the Philistines (1 Samuel 31:1-6), Abner established Saul's son Ish-bosheth as the hereditary King. Of the 12 tribes of Israel, only the tribe of Judah followed Our Awesome God with David as King.
Soon a battle erupted between Ish-bosheth's army under Abner and David's forces under Joab. Abner fled and was pursued by Joab's brother, Asahel. Abner told Asahel twice to stop following him but the eager young soldier persisted and Abner turned and killed him. Joab was determined to avenge his brother. Several years later, Abner realized Saul's family was doomed to defeat and that David would be the next king, so he decided to change sides. He hoped that in exchange for his delivering Saul's kingdom, David would make him commander of his army. He was murdered by Joab.
Abner lived by his wits and his own will. God was someone with whom he would cooperate if it suited his plans, but otherwise, Abner did what seemed best for him at the time. We can identify with Abner's tendency to give God conditional cooperation since often our own obedience is greatest when the instructions in God's Word fit into our desires. But our allegiance to Our Awesome God is tested when His plans run contrary to our own plans. It is doubtful that Abner went to heaven.
We (as a church) want all people in church, worshipping Our Awesome God with faith and obedience every Sunday.
