"And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth … And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar."
(Genesis 10:8, 10 KJV)
Western scientists call an area around the meeting area of the Tigris and Euphrates River valley the "Cradle of Civilization" or one of the earliest areas settled by man. There were many such regions on many continents that were called "Cradle of Civilization". Cities grew where water was close, the ground fertile, the weather nice and people came to trade. In stating this, we need to leave a lot of unknown areas open since we are daily finding out new information from so many areas and sources such as archeology, atmospheric conditions, carbon dating, languages, locations, years it happened, manuscripts, hieroglyphs, writing on cave walls in many places, the shifts in the earth, etc.
Some of these changes began years before Noah and the flood such as erosion of soil from Mount Ararat (which means sacred or high land) as God allowed His world to change. But the earth did change after the flood in many ways also. The waters ran down the mountains of Armenia into the Tigris and Euphrates River valley and the other Arratans slowly followed the Sumerians from the east down the mountains to the best and richest land with the best climate for living things. The crops were plentiful and tasty from the wheat to rye producing stronger livestock. This became a place to water your camels and animals and to get more things by trading.
Most scientists conclude that the Sumerians were an ancient people that created one of the first world civilizations. They called themselves the Arratans and lived in the Highlands of Armenia. But some moved down the mountains to the fertile plains and they built cities and defense fortifications, invented things, and generally made life easier for the rich and powerful. They developed good agricultural practices, built libraries and palaces with indoor plumbing, etc. But God reduced man's life span after the flood and he became proud of his accomplishments.
Our Awesome God did help man learn faster and find easier ways to do things until their decision to build the Tower of Babel. Pride in man and no gratitude to God, among other sins, will lead Him to bring about change and this resulted in His changing the way He was doing things. He scattered people all over the world and distributed the knowledge amongst them. The western "Cradle of Civilization" was scattered to all continents and it appears that each group with a common language applied some of the skills they bought with them to living in a new environment and forgot those that were not useful.
