"Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible."
(Daniel 2:31 KJV)
Daniel was a young prince of Judah who was taken into captivity by King Nebuchadnezzar II who was king of Babylon from 605 to 562 BC. Daniel's prophecies were accurate, even for events that were far in the future. One such prophecy was the image that Nebuchadnezzar dreamed of in Chapter 2 of The Book of Daniel. Our Awesome God, through Nebuchadnezzar's dream and Daniel's interpretation, disclosed His plan for the ages until the final triumph of Christ at Armageddon.
Daniel explained to the king that his Babylonian Empire was the head of gold. The parts of the image that were made of silver, bronze and iron represented three different but powerful empires that would follow Babylon, the Medo-Persian, the Greek and the Roman. Silver was the Medo-Persian Empire that conquered Babylon in 539 BC. The bronze empire was Alexander the Great's Greco-Macedonian Empire. The iron was the ruthless Roman Empire during the iron age. At its peak, Trajan was emperor (AD 98-117) but the Roman Empire ruled for many centuries. The last part of this image had ten toes made of clay and iron. (The toes should have crumbled under so much weight.) Since this last has not yet happened, most theologians think it will be a confederation and not an empire.
All have occurred but the last. Our Awesome God has told us the future through a prophet in 600 BC and so far it has happened as he foretold. What are we doing with this knowledge? God gave it to us for a purpose. His purpose was to remind us to tell everyone around us about God and His Son, Jesus Christ whose saving power can save anyone who repents of his sins and believes in Jesus Christ. Because the end of earth as we know it is coming after the events foretold in the Book of Revelation happens, we Christians haven't long to tell all people about Jesus Christ's saving power for all men.
