"And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her. Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?"
(Genesis 17:16-17 KJV)
God is Awesome and He told Abraham about the blessings he would give him and his family, but Abraham still doubted. Abraham doubted but God knew this was His man and his doubt would turn to belief before the child came the next year.
Now listen close to Abraham's request of Our Awesome God (was he finding a way out for God?) as he asks about his son, Ishmael:
"And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee! And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant and with his seed after him."
(Genesis 17:18-19 KJV)
God brought Abraham back to his real doubt of God's ability to make Sarah successfully conceive a child at 90 years old. So next "the man known as Father Abraham" had his doubts and was trying to "help" God?
Would you believe it if you were in Abraham's place and Our Awesome God told you your son of "promise" would be born to your 90 year old wife? Most of us wouldn't believe God. Like Abraham, we would doubt. Our answer to God might be our age or maybe, like Abraham did earlier, to try to "help" God by having a baby some other way? Adoption? In vitro? Surely our "advanced and sophisticated" minds can come up with some good ways to "help" God.
Yes, we would not want to admit our doubt and we would want to help Our Awesome God. Over the thousands of years between us and Abraham, our excuses remain about the same but, God is Awesome, and also remains the same. If He has made a promise, He will keep His promise.
Abraham and Sarah's son was born within a year just as Our Awesome God had told him. Abraham did not doubt God again to our knowledge. He became God's man! But look at the 100 years it took him to believe God completely with no lingering doubts. Surely we can do better. Praise the Lord!
