"Yet the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land. Yet it came to pass, when the children of Israel were waxen strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute; but did not utterly drive them out."
(Joshua 17:12-13 KJV)
Our Awesome God had told the Israelites to "utterly drive out" all the people in the cities they would capture in Canaan. Manasseh was one of the twelve tribes of Israel who were to drive the Canaanites out. They were told to kill all the humans in the cities as Joshua did in his 25 successful years as leader of the Israelites. Because anything left would cause them to sin. But there were a few problems the Israelites had which included 1) Incomplete Obedience and 2) Arrogant Pride that they never overcame.
Incomplete Obedience: This will keep you from being all you can be or doing all you can do. Never do anything for God halfway because incomplete obedience is simply disobedience. This is true in whatever we do, whether it be for God, our family, our work, our church or for Joshua's Israelites told to "drive them out." Our Awesome God wants complete obedience to all His Words. We need to be sure our obedience is complete.
Arrogant Pride. Pride is deceptive and a deadly sin. "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall"(Proverbs 16:18 KJV). Knowing that they were only partially obedient, they still expected Our Awesome God to give them more, even though they had not done what He told them to do. They had not fully possessed even the land they had. In Joshua 17:17-18, The tribe of Manasseh was given a hill with woods and told to clear it up and cut down the trees, but they didn't clear it up.
Don’t ask God for more of something if you aren’t doing right by what He’s already given you. Some want more understanding of the Bible but they don’t obey the parts they do understand. Some want more money but aren’t faithful with what they have. Why should God give them more? Get rid of your incomplete obedience and arrogant pride. Clear out the clutter and corruption of your "trees" as the Israelites should have, for Our Awesome God is waiting for you to join Him in heaven.
