"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. ... So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. " (
Ephesians 5:22, 28 KJV)
The definition of eros love is the physical, sensual love between a husband and wife. This Greek term (eros or erotic love) is not found in the Holy Bible, it is pictured in the book, "The Song of Solomon". This type of love is only for those who are married and then only with their spouses.
One of our problems is that Christian people have not always given Biblical definitions to Biblical things. We need to realize with a clean heart and pure hands that "eros," erotic love, is a gift from Our Awesome God. He gives it to us and says, "It is good." We need to treat this "eros" love in a careful way by remembering that our marriage vows say "for better or for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health until death do us part."
Let's look at love in relationship to the long term establishment of marriage. We usually wonder how people have been able to remain married for 40 years or more. A marriage based only on eros love (mostly physical attraction) will fail because when physical attraction wanes, there is no basis left for continuing the marriage. Phileo (brotherly) love can keep a marriage going past the physical as long as there are common beliefs and goals between the partners. It takes a lot of work and good communication to allow one spouse to basically believe most of the same things the other spouse believes.
But for a marriage to last a lifetime, Agape (unconditional) love must also be developed. For if erotic love stands alone, then all of its imperfections will come unopposed to the surface and divorce is around the corner. So include agape love (it is contagious) in your marriage and stay married. A good and lengthy marriage is a wonderful, God-given adventure!
We need to learn as much as possible about Our Awesome God, His Son and the purpose for our lives on earth and in heaven. LWBC is a Bible believing church that tries to live Jesus Christ's commandment to "love one another as I have loved you." (John 15:12 KJV). Join us this Sunday as we learn more about Our Awesome God and teach others from His Holy Bible. Our church starts with small groups on Sunday at 9:30 AM and Worship Service at 10:30 AM. On Sunday evening at 6:00 PM, a Bible Study meets for an hour and there is more during the week. We love visitors!
