"And I said unto you, I am the Lord your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice… And the Lord looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?"
(Judges 6:10, 14 KJV)
In the Bible is a Book called Judges which tells of the Jewish people between the death of Joshua and the start of the kings of Israel with Saul as king. There are several tribes and their problems solved with Our Awesome God's help but Gideon was the fourth major judge during this time period.
The scripture verses above are found in Gideon's story of humility that Our Awesome God would chose him to save Israel (Judges 6-11) In chapter 6, an angel calls him to start a military campaign against their oppressor. In this chapter Gideon begins to realize that the Lord really wants him, the "least" of his poor family, to crush the Midianites who had taken all of their produce and food leaving them hopeless. The Israelites had prayed to God and He chose a man who was poor and unimportant to be His leader. His job was to drive out the Midianites, Amalekites and the children of the East (Judges 6:3). He started with 22,000 men and ended up with 300 men chosen by God. According to God's plan, Gideon placed 100 men after dark on each of 3 sides of the enemy camp, armed with trumpets and veiled bright lamps. At midnight, they blew the trumpets, unveiled the lamps and shouted, "The sword of the Lord and of Gideon." Blinded by the lamps and deafened by the trumpets, the enemy panicked and fought among themselves until the army was destroyed.
After the "battle," Gideon captured and beheaded several Midianite princes and kings. (Judges 8:5-21) His complete victory over Midian and its cities was remembered still in Isaiah 9:4 as "The Day of Midian." He was asked by Israel to be their king but he said only God was King.
Gideon went home where he was said to have several wives and 70 sons. But God is Awesome and led him in all his victories as He said He would. Gideon had doubted and even had God prove who He was with the fleece; but he did exactly what God told him to do. We should be as good at listening and obeying as Gideon. Can we pray, listen and obey our Lord? Read your Holy Bible in the Book of Judges! Pray, listen and obey!
