"Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine."
(Proverbs 3:9-10 KJV)
Let us focus on giving to God. Remember, God, the Creator, owns it all and gives some of it to each of us. We should be trying to see how much we should be giving to Him, how much He wants us to keep and how it should be used. Our Awesome God wants us to give our "first fruits" (or most important things) to Him, willingly and joyfully as a part of our worship of Him, but only after we have provided for the basic needs of our families and satisfied our debts.
Tithing is one way of giving to Our Awesome God and is the practice of donating a regular portion of your income to support God's work and your church. "Tithe" literally means ten percent and was the amount recommended in Old Testament times to dedicate to God. Literal tithing is not commanded in the Bible and it is not required.
When you have met your basic needs and paid your debts, give God the part of your remaining income that you are happy to give, knowing that you are giving up some of your wants but none of your needs. There is no set percentage but give something! The next time, the money left may be different. If it is less, maybe half, give less, like half of what you gave before. If it is double, give double. This is called proportional giving. God wants to bless us with more blessings because, whatever the amount, we have given Him from what is most important to us. As your debts are paid off, your proportional giving will increase and you will find yourself giving a tithe (10%) and more to Our Awesome God. Giving money as it becomes available is important to a Christian Child of the King.
While Our Awesome God does not need or command us to tithe or give to Him, He wants us to give to Him and His work because it is good for us. When we give to Him (1) we show or remember Him as Lord, (2) we learn to handle our money better, (3) we become more aware usually of what our money is being used for in the church and (4) we further God's kingdom.
