"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
(John 3:16 KJV)
"Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."
(Matthew 22:37-40 KJV)
The Bible indicates that love is from Our Awesome God. In fact, the Bible says "...God is love." (1 John 4:8 KJV) Love is one of the primary characteristics of God for He created love. Likewise, God has endowed us with the capacity for love, since we are created in His image. But our ability to love is not as great as His while we are on this earth.
"The primary meaning of the word 'love' in Scripture is a 'purposeful commitment to sacrificial action for another.' In the Bible, it is a fact that loving God is equated with obeying His Word. The two are inseparable." This was preached by Cooper Abrams in a sermon on Biblical Love from 1 John 4:7-10.
According to the Greek Language there are three types of "love" mentioned in the Bible. Agape love is the love we will talk about today. Agape is a special word representing the divine love of Our Awesome God toward His Son, His believers and human beings in general. It is also used to depict the outwardly focused love God expects believers to have for one another, and the love we are to have for all people. This agape love won't allow you to be prejudiced toward anyone, it won't allow you to gossip about them and it won't allow sarcasm spoken to them. This agape love allowed Our Awesome God to send Jesus Christ to die for your salvation. The two types of love not mentioned today are Eros and Phileo which are found in the Bible. Eros and Phileo love will be discussed later.
All Christians should be non-prejudiced and loving to all people whether they believe in Our Awesome God or not and no matter how others act or what they say. We gently or carefully let them know what we believe and let our love for them show.
