"Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen."
(1 Timothy 1:17 KJV)
Although the above Bible verse is a prayer from Paul for Timothy, its truth is that Our Awesome God is eternal, immortal, and invisible unless He wants to be visible to us. God was partially seen by Moses and the nobles of Israel on Mount Sinai but no one else has seen Him.
"And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness." (Exodus 24:10 KJV)
God does tell us, while talking to Moses, that no man can see God's face and live:
"And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live...thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shalt not br seen." (Exodus 33:20, 23b KJV)
So Moses was shown only God's Goodness to see and they often talked together in this manner. We can "feel" the peace and goodness of God when we pray and occasionally at other times in our lives, but God is Awesome and is always available but invisible to us. We are aware He is beside us if we call Him or have just prayed. But our God is ever with us and vigilant for us in times of trouble.
Perhaps what we have learned about the process of knowing other people can shed light on questions about knowing God. We recognize that knowing other minds involves an act of faith, whether we are speaking of other persons or of Our Awesome God. We know other minds indirectly, not directly. We assume the others exist, and have an outlook on the world somewhat like our own, but we can never be certain. There is evidence of the workings of another person's mind in what he says and does. Similarly, we have God's Word and miracles as evidence. We believe other minds exist that we cannot see, but because we cannot perceive any other person's mental state, we must accept this belief by faith. In fact, we have as much evidence for believing in God as we do for believing in other minds we cannot see. Although both lie beyond proof, we accept both as a basic, foundational assumption. Our Awesome God is invisible but He is alive and close to us at all times if we wait and focus on Him only.
