"And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, then I will not go."
(Judges 4:8 KJV)
"Praise ye the Lord for the avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves".
(Judges 5:2 KJV)
In the Bible is a Book called Judges which tells of the Jewish people between the death of Joshua and the start of the kings of Israel or Saul as king. There are several tribes and their problems solved with Our Awesome God's help, but He used Deborah in a mighty way to awaken His people and to learn to lean on Him for help. Israel had been unfaithful to Him.
Deborah was a prophetess of Our Awesome God, the wife of Lappidoth, and a highly regarded judge of Israel who sat under a palm tree in Ephraim. But, as you can see in this "song of Deborah," which Deborah composed and sang before the people of Israel, she considered herself to be "a mother in Israel." (Judges 5:5)
She was the only women judge mentioned in Our Awesome God's Holy Bible, and this was a man's world, so she must have done her job as judge with love and firmness. The people must have recognized her authority and love and her prophecies must have come true.
Deborah lived somewhere about 1150 BC, about a century after the Hebrews entered Canaan. She was ruling when Our Awesome God spoke to her and she called Barak to bring 10,000 men to fight (Judges 4:7). Barak would only go if Deborah went (Judges 4:8). She agreed and Barak respected her enough to do it even though she told him that a woman would get the credit for the victory. (Judges 4:9) So Israel won the battle as Deborah had foretold.
The Bible does not tell us what her husband did for a living and it does not tell us if she had children. We don't know if she could read or write. These were not important to Our Awesome God so He did not have His writer say. But this woman had to be courageous and following God, otherwise she would have been stoned to death.
Our Awesome God was showing us that we don't have to have degrees, a prestigious family, wealth, or be a certain gender to be God's servant. Just believe in God and His Son and obey Him! He will use you if you are ready and willing.
