"For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law".
(Proverbs 4:2 KJV)
"Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but His that sent Me".
(John 7:16 KJV)
"As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,"
(1 Timothy 1:3 KJV)
Merriam-Webster online Dictionary states doctrine as meaning, "a: something that is taught, b: a principle or position or the body of principles in a branch of knowledge or system of belief: dogma, c: a principle of law established through past decisions, d: a statement of fundamental government policy especially in international relations, e: a military principle or set of strategies."
"Sound or good doctrine" would be the commandments or teachings of Our Awesome God and Jesus as found in the Holy Bible concerning the actions, thoughts, worship, and teachings of a Christian. From the time of the Ten Commandments, many false teachers have been found teaching false doctrine about God and later about Jesus. In the last Scripture (1 Timothy 1:3), the Apostle Paul is asking Timothy to confront these false teachers and teach the truth or "sound doctrine" about Our Awesome God and His Son, Jesus Christ.
How can we tell the difference between false doctrine and "good" doctrine"? We still have false teachers today, so we need to know how to see and hear the differences in these teachings. First, read your Holy Bible, it needs to be a good, accurate translation of the original. If the teaching you are hearing deviates from what the Bible teaches, be very careful and checkout exactly what the teacher believes. Second, "sound and good doctrine" builds up the Christ-like love in believers. The purpose is never to improve the life or position of the speaker. This Christ-like love always puts the other person and their welfare as more important than the teacher. Third, check the results of this teaching and preaching with what is in the Holy Bible. Is the congregation a loving, caring group that follows what the Holy Bible says they should be doing? Is their language Christ-like? Ask them what they believe about Christ and God. Does it follow what the Holy Bible says? This is important to know as it will affect your life and beliefs if you become part of this congregation!
