"No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon."
(Matthew 6:24 KJV)
"The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender."
(Proverbs 22:7 KJV)
These Bible verses clearly state that Our Awesome God does not want His people in debt. He wants them debt free. He wants us to find a way to become free of the debts that entangle us and cause us to take our focus off of God. He even states His reasons why! Today, even our nation is a BIG debtor. Think of the possible consequences. Will we as a nation survive? What can we do? Pray!
We could start by getting our own finances in order so we have no credit card balance after paying it for the month, our car is paid off, our house mortgage doesn't makes us groan every month and we don't need to borrow money to pay our taxes. The total interest alone could be more than your paycheck! Are any of these a problem for you? Start with one at a time until they are gone.
There are a number of good programs to reduce and eliminate debt. All of them begin by making a list of only the needs of your family. It is often difficult for a person to separate his real needs from his "wants" and the programs will help you as will Our Awesome God if you ask Him. They show you ways to take control of your own finances but it takes determination and sacrifice to reduce your spending to just the needs so you can pay off your debts. The entire family must work together on it to succeed.
You can start yourself by just looking at your grocery list. What do you need for healthy, no frills meals? Mark off desserts and other extras. Talk about it with the family and get them involved. They will probably find more "wants" still hidden in the list. You can do the same sort of thing for clothing, transportation and housing.
The needs lists are not that difficult but it takes time and effort and another person to keep you honest. Moving from the lists to actions is where a program can help you. They have tricks you can use to stay on target for debt reduction and it is not all sacrifice, they have allowances for a limited amount of entertainment and indulgence.
If you can’t join a program, just start going through everything you buy and check if it is something that is a basic need. Take your list of basic needs and add the costs up for 6 months. Then go add up what you spent for the last 6 months to see what you can save. If this does not reduce the expenses to what your paycheck can cover, seek professional help. Ask your pastor about people who can help, using Biblical Principles, to reduce and then eliminate your debts. Our Awesome God loves you and does not want you burdened with debt and its problems.
