"Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me."
(Isaiah 6:8 KJV)
Isaiah had a life-changing encounter with Our Awesome God in Chapter 6 of the Book of Isaiah in the Bible and he really changed to a man who knew God. As you can see in the Bible verse above, he became fervent in trying to get his people in Judah to change their wicked ways and turn again to the God he had seen. Isaiah lived and preached for forty, maybe sixty, years of his life and during the reign of four kings of Judah with no real change in the people's behavior.
Isaiah was a prophet of Our Awesome God who may have been of the aristocracy of Judah. He definitely knew politics and the kings, Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah. The prophet wrote 66 chapters in the Book of Isaiah and they correspond to the 66 Books of the Bible in some content. He was called "The Messianic Prophet" because of his descriptions and prophecy of Jesus Christ.
Isaiah was Our Awesome God's spokesman to Jerusalem and Judah at a time when the nation was enjoying great prosperity. Military actions were remote from the Jerusalem and had little to no impact on daily life. Worship in the Temple was legalistic, sacrificing according to the letter of the Law of Moses but insincere. For the most part, the kings of Judah supported the Temple and kept their personal faith in God but they ignored the expanding influence of sin among the people.
Worldly pleasures were easily available to those who could afford them and there were many. The nation was starting on a "slippery slope" that would lead to God's judgment and destruction. Isaiah spoke God's indictment against their sins, urging them to repent. He then foretold destruction upon them if they did not return to God. He wasn't popular.
In the midst of these dire warnings, Isaiah also foretold of a bright future with the coming Messiah. Our Awesome God, Isaiah preached, would not forget His covenant made to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and David. He would spare a remnant of the nation of Israel out of which would come the Messiah and His new kingdom.
Seeing Our Awesome God was life-changing for this prophet who may have started his ministry in Judah after seeing Him. This man may have helped keep Judah in existence by his preaching and God waiting a little longer for His people to repent. Isaiah saw what Israel was doing and preached to his people to change their wicked ways before it was too late. Though no real change was seen in the ruling class, others may have changed and become faithful to God. Ask God when you get to heaven. Meanwhile, keep learning more about Our Awesome God and His Word.
