"The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin: To whom the word of the Lord came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign."
(Jeremiah 1:1, 2 KJV)
Jeremiah, the prophet, was a major prophet because of the amount he wrote. He was known as "the dark" or "the weeping prophet" because he spent forty years telling the kingdom of Judah of their approaching doom and captivity. He was still in his teens when Our Awesome God called him to start preaching to the "stiff-necked and unrepentant" people of Judah. As the people and the king rejected his message from God, he preached more and he slowly became a heartbroken prophet who was despised and rejected by his own people because of his message.
This persistent prophet told the religious and government officials of his day that they had abandoned God and His plan and were morally bankrupting their nation with their contrived systems. He declared that the only way to avoid the doom that was coming was to surrender to Our Awesome God's will (that is just what would happen if we would surrender to God's will for our own nation). Jeremiah knew that Israel was going into captivity and what this would do to them.
Jeremiah even predicted the kingdom's restoration but not as a free kingdom. In telling about Jeremiah, we need to notice his persistence in telling his prophecy because he didn't change his real message of doom no matter what the leaders did to him. Our Awesome God knew he wouldn't, even as God knew He would forgive "His people" because His mercy and grace demanded it. Jeremiah was persistent and God will use this same characteristic to save souls in our world, even as He warned Jeremiah's Judah.
We need the same persistence in telling the world about Jesus Christ and His saving power. It is the job He asked us to do and it is everyone's job wherever they live and no matter what they do. It gives all a chance for being saved. So tell someone about Our Awesome God and His Son, Jesus Christ.
