"Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb."
(Exodus 3:1 KJV)
Jethro was a Midianite priest who had seven daughters that served as shepherdesses for his flocks. After Moses killed the Egyptian guard and fled into the desert, he met Jethro's daughters and helped them water their flock. So Jethro welcomed Moses, gave him one of his daughters, Zipporah, as a wife and made him a shepherd. The Bible mentions Jethro again in Exodus 4:18 when Moses asks him for permission to return to Egypt.
After Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt into the Sinai area, Jethro brought his daughter, Moses' wife, and their two sons to Moses. Jethro was given a warm welcome and he had an evening meal with Israelite leaders and Aaron. Then Jethro praised Our Awesome God and made sacrifices to Him (Exodus 18:1-12) saying He was "greater than all gods". The next day, before he went home, Jethro helped Moses to organize a better judicial system for God's chosen people, relieving Moses of some of his duties to about 3 million people, (Exodus 18:13-23, 27).
Jethro is called by two other names in the Bible, Reuel in Exodus 2:18 and Numbers 10:29 and Hobab in Judges 4:11. (Hobab is also named as the son of Moses' father-in-law in Numbers 10:29). The Holy Bible doesn't give us enough details to understand the names used or the Midianite religion at that time. Jethro had a lot of wisdom for a man of the desert and owner of flocks. As a Midianite, he would have been descended from Abraham. But what were his background and experience? We are not told.
Our Awesome God can and does use people outside the Jewish or Christian faiths to further the world's knowledge of Himself or to fulfill a purpose. As His people, we should study His Word and be available to do His work at every opportunity.
If you are a Christian who has strayed away from Our Awesome God or someone who has never been a Christian or a person who needs to help minister to others, join us at Living Word Baptist Church on Sunday at 9:30 AM for Bible Study and at 10:30 AM for a Praise and Worship Service. At 6:00 PM Sunday evening, we have a Bible Study along with AWANA for children until 7:30 PM. On Wednesdays, we meet at 7:00 PM for Prayer Requests, and a Bible Study follows until 8:00 PM. We welcome all people and love them!
