"And all the king's servants, that were in the king's gate, bowed, and reverenced Haman: for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence."
(Esther 3:2 KJV)
"Thou shalt have no other gods before me."
(Exodus 20:3 KJV)
Mordecai was an older male relative of Queen Esther and a Jew in Media-Persia (Esther 2:5). He was a displaced Israelite during the Captivity and he knew the 10 Commandments and therefore God's law about worshiping anyone or anything but Our Awesome God. He knew what the king of Persia had said about all bowing to Haman, as Haman was a privileged prince. But he refused to bow to Haman and the Bible does not tell us why except that Mordecai knew Haman hated Jews. Mordecai was a good Jew so we may conclude that he didn't bow to anyone but the king and God, especially not in worship.
The Bible does tell us that Haman wanted all to honor him and that he hated Jews. So Haman, seeing that Mordecai didn't bow to him, and then finding out that Mordecai was a Jew, decided Mordecai had to die (Esther 3:5). Mordecai knowing that Haman, and possibly the king, was after him didn't bow though he saw Haman every day
as he left the palace. Haman was infuriated so he ordered that gallows be built for Mordecai.
But God is Awesome and was in control as always, so Haman ended up hanged on those gallows and Mordecai was promoted into a powerful position in the government. Read your Bible in the short Book of Esther to find out how. When you obey Our Awesome God, you may win on earth and you will be protected by God from many things, but you definitely will win in heaven with God and Jesus.
Mordecai stayed true to his faith in Our Awesome God and His commandments.
God is Awesome and has promised to help and protect His people, and His church is a part of that promise. If you are a Christian who has strayed away from the God or someone who has never been a Christian, join us at Living Word Baptist Church on Sunday at 10:30 AM for worship and caring from our church of Christians. On Wednesdays, we meet at 7:00 PM for Prayer Requests, and a Bible Study follows until 8:00 PM. We welcome all people!
