"And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son: And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord hath cursed."
(Genesis 5:28-29 KJV)
Noah's birth was seen as an important event since mankind was so evil that Our Awesome God said He would destroy every living thing on the face of the earth (Genesis 6:7-8). But God being just, loving and merciful saw that Noah was righteous and his family and Lamech, his father, called him "this one will comfort us concerning our work..." (Genesis 5:28-29)
Noah was a good carpenter following Our Awesome God's directions making his vessel six times longer than it was wide, as we do today (Genesis 6:14-16, 22). He was patient, taking one hundred years to make his ark and preaching repentance to people who didn't listen but laughed at him. Noah was a righteous man but not a sinless man as he over indulged in wine consumption and embarrassed his sons (Genesis 9:21-23). Noah pleased God because he obeyed and loved Him with his whole heart without grumbling every few minutes. He was persistent!
Our Awesome God blessed him with three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth after he was 500 years old. He was to build the boat of gopher (some Bibles say cypress) wood. "Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it." (Genesis 6:14-16 KJV)
So Noah made a large boat with room for food and animals.
"But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee. And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female. Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of
every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive. And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them." (Genesis 6: 18-21 KJV) The door was then closed by Our Awesome God and only He could open it.
