"Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?"
(1 Samuel 10:1 KJV)
" And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes, and by your thousands,"
(1 Samuel 10:19 KJV)
Our Awesome God wanted to talk with and direct His people, first through Moses (Numbers 12:6-8), and then through their prophets. But the Israelites wanted a king (1Samuel 8:4-9). They had cried for a king for several generations before God let the people chose Saul. God knew all their kings would not listen to God nor would they obey Him. So God, though He had known the Israelites would demand a king, was upset with them because He could see the problems they were making for themselves.
Our Awesome God sees and knows the consequences as his people make decisions they shouldn't. Slowly His chosen people pushed themselves deeper into sin (Judges 21:25) and they stopped listening to God as He allowed them to set a king over themselves and be guided by that king (1Samuel 9:27-10:1). So Saul became the first king of Israel.
Like our children as they grow push the boundaries that we set, so Our Awesome God (our Father) has set rules for us that we disobey until God must punish our disobedience. Then we look back and cry out that the punishment is too great. The Israelites went into exile and captivity for all the sins they committed as a nation and people (Jeremiah 39:1-9). Will we?
Like the kings of Israel, no human government can ever bring the people to long term obedience to God. Our Awesome God wants obedience and fellowship with individuals. First, everyone has sinned and all sin debts must be paid and accepted by each individual. God is Awesome in providing that payment through the sacrificial death of His Son, Jesus Christ. Any government that in any way discourages individuals from accepting that payment puts itself at risk of annihilating judgment under the Wrath of God.
Yes, Our Awesome God brought us forgiveness by sending Jesus Christ, His beloved son, into the world to save man from his many and varied sins against God! (Isaiah 7:14) God loves us and, like all good parents, He wants what is best for us. Now He wants us to accept His leadership though Jesus Christ, as our High Priest and King, regardless of the government under which we may live.
