"But Sarai was barren; she had no child".
(Genesis 11:30 KJV)
"And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women".
(Genesis 18:10-11 KJV)
Sarah was a beautiful woman who had been married to her half brother, Abraham, in the city of Ur near the Persian Gulf in Sumer, which is now southern Iraq. They were of a rich and privileged family in a busy, prosperous city of commerce and trading. Abraham’s father moved his family, including their nephew, Lot, from Ur to Haran, about 500 miles (Genesis 11:31). They lived in Haran until Sarah was 65 years old and her husband, Abraham, was 75 years old (Genesis 12:4). Now Sarah was barren and had no children which really bothered Sarah since God had said Abraham would father a whole new nation.
Sarah had many adventures from being put into a harem in Egypt (Genesis 12:15), to seeing the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, to bearing a son, Isaac, at the age of 90 (Genesis 21:2-3). Thus she became the mother of the nation of Israel. Sarah's loyalty to Abraham resulted in her sharing in his blessings and Our Awesome God blessed them with prosperity in all aspects of their lives.
Although she struggled in her faith, God saw fit to include Sarah as the first woman named in the Hebrews 11, "Faith Hall of Fame." Sarah learned many things in her lifetime which included: 1) Nothing is impossible for God (Genesis 18:4). 2) God's timetable is not ours – wait. 3) God does not make promises He does not keep. 4) God doesn't always stop us when we make poor choices. 5) She learned the importance of commitment.
Sarah died at the age of 127 years at Hebron and was buried in a cave in Canaan. She is held as a godly example for women in Isaiah 51:2 and in 1 Peter 3:4-6. Are we godly examples to those around us? Have we learned what Our Awesome God wants us to know?
