"Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven; And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground."
(Genesis 19:24, 25 KJV)
Our Awesome God gave us the story of Sodom and Gomorrah and we think of sin and sex, but there are some deeper lessons found in this story about a group of five wealthy and decadent cities that were around the Dead Sea area, if not, actually in it.
Lot, Abraham's nephew, knew early that Sodom was a sinful city. Still, the Holy Bible tells us that, even though he was aware of their sin, he remained among them (2 Peter 2:8). In fact, the Bible indicates that Lot was drawn ever closer to the city as time went by just as sin always does draws you deeper into it. First, he “pitched his tent toward Sodom” (Genesis 13:12) and then he “dwelt in Sodom" (Genesis 14:12). Finally he lived in the city and “sat in the gate of Sodom” (Genesis 19:1). If we dabble with sin, we are often pulled into it a little at a time, without noticing until we are fully involved. The safest way to avoid sin is to stay far away from its tempting influence and stay close to Our Awesome God.
The biblical record of Sodom and Gomorrah plus 3 other cities, as given to Abraham, is one of the darkest stories in the Holy Bible. It is a glaring example of sin’s power and pull. The story gives us a glimpse of how far sinful humanity will go when they reject Our Awesome God and indulge in evil rebellion against Him.
In this story we also see the mercy and grace of Our Awesome God in that He made a way of escape for those who trusted in the offer of salvation from the coming judgment. God gives that offer today. Jesus Christ died on a cross so that, by trusting in Him for our salvation, we will be saved from being delivered into a fiery judgment for eternity.
Our eternal destination depends on whether we choose Jesus Christ or reject Him. The former leads to eternal life, the latter leads to judgment such as Sodom and Gomorrah experienced. Read Genesis 19 and see the pleading of Abraham and Lot for the people of these cities. God's patience and mercy finally ran out (Genesis 19:24). (The 5 cities may be at the corner of the Dead Sea according to Biblical Archeology in 2014).
Our church is a loving church that wants to help others to a better understanding of Our Awesome God and His love, mercy and grace for all mankind without ignoring His wrath and judgment of sin. Join us at Living Word Baptist Church as we love others while preaching and teaching from our Holy Bible about God and Jesus Christ. Our church has a Bible Study at 9:30 AM on Sunday and Worship Service at 10:30 AM and then at 6:00 PM there is another Bible Study along with AWANA for children until 7:30 PM. We love visitors!
