"Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.
(Colossians 4:6 KJV)
In this Scripture, Paul is telling us that, because we are Christians (Our Awesome God's children), our general speech and conversation should be gracious and kind, not just for friends and family, but for everyone we meet. We need to be consistently gracious even when we are under stress, being persecuted, or being unjustly accused, for we are examples to the unbelievers.
The Christian should always have speech that is not only gracious but "seasoned with salt." Our speech needs to have a purpose for it and it should have an effect on the hearer to improve themselves and all of your speech should leave them knowing you love them. The Christian's speech is thoughtful and encourages people to try to be more like Jesus Christ. It is not always easy to speak in a kind, gentle, thoughtful way that will make others want to improve themselves instead of defend themselves.
When we speak, we need to remember that Our Awesome God may be using our words and actions to lead someone to Christ. Think of yourself as stirring up an aroma of love, of dedication and heating up the Holy Spirit to convict someone of their need for Jesus Christ. Be we man or woman, we need to think of our words before we speak them because our words maybe preserving the life and health of someone or giving off the scent of God's grace to a dying person.
Salt is used as a preservative and often stings as it keeps the corruption out of your life and filth out of your speech (Proverbs 27:6 KJV). Keep the salt in your speech for flavor, wit and charm so people will want to hear more from you. All this takes is Our Awesome God, time and practice to get it right. Are you practicing or just talking (James 3:2 KJV)? It may take a lifetime of practicing to get your speech to come with grace and be "seasoned with salt."
