"Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:"
(Genesis 12:1, 2 KJV)
"The Idea of Covenant. The term 'covenant' is of Latin origin (con venire), meaning a coming together. It presupposes two or more parties who come together to make a contract, agreeing on promises, stipulations, privileges, and responsibilities. In religious and theological circles there has not been agreement on precisely what is to be understood by the biblical term. It is used variously in biblical contexts. In political situations, it can be translated treaty; in a social setting, it means a lifelong friendship agreement; or it can refer to a marriage." Taken from, Dictionaries - Baker's Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology - Covenant.
Most covenants or grants that we know of are between equals such as two countries making a peace treaty, marriage agreements, and so forth. Now some scholars have concluded that the covenant Our Awesome God made with human beings is also bilateral. This is not true. God started, decided the rules, decided what the conditions were, bore all the actions and then He confirmed His covenant with humanity. That makes it unilateral. People are receivers, not contributors; people are not suppose to offer anything to the covenant; they are to accept it as offered, to keep it as demanded, and to receive the results that God, by oath, assures us will not be withheld. (Since Our Awesome God knows everything including what is best for us. He also knows we need more faith in Him.)
The Bible speaks of seven different covenants, in four of them (Abrahamic, Palestinian, Mosaic, Davidic) God dealt with the nation of Israel. Of those, three are unconditional in nature, that is, regardless of Israel's obedience or disobedience, God still will fulfill these covenants with Israel. The Mosaic Covenant is conditional in nature. This covenant will bring either blessing or cursing depending on Israel's obedience or disobedience. Three of the covenants (Adamic, Noahic, New) are made between God and mankind in general, and are not limited to the nation of Israel.
Our Awesome God chose to deal with the human race using covenants or grants. He knows all about what is best for us and how we will respond but even more, He created us and loves us! We at LWBC teach and preach from God's Holy Bible and believe He sent His Son for our salvation. Join us each Sunday at 9:30 AM for Bible Study and 10:30 AM for Worship Service.
