"But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.".
(Matthew 5:37 KJV)
"But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation."
(James 5:12 KJV)
We should remove attitudes and actions, all double purposes and intents from our speech. Our speech should better express just a single thought, with a single intent since this is better. It should be truthful with love.
Peter is an example in his denial of Jesus Christ when he said, "...I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest." And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew." (Mark 14:68 KJV). Here Peter was being untruthful and using lies to keep himself out of trouble. Later, it was different: "Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel... Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole... Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." (Acts 4:8, 10, 12 KJV) Notice how he was truthful and direct but was loving. No deceit or double meanings.
The Holy Spirit had made Peter change his attitude, his words and his actions. Now Peter was bold. He remained that way and he impressed those same rulers and elders of Israel. What needs to be said should be truthful and said with love while your actions should help others believe the truth.
The Book of James in the Bible is always direct and truthful. Most people add adjectives to make the truth sound less harsh. Just be sure the truth is understood, but say it in loving and kind way, allowing the person the opportunity to come to their own conclusions before you get there.
In the Book of Zechariah, Our Awesome God is speaking to the Israelites through Zechariah telling them what they should do. Zechariah 8:16 says they must speak the truth among other things. So when you speak, speak the "truth with love".
