"Jesus wept… Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it."
(John 11:35, 38 KJV)
"O Lord my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me."
(Psalms 30:2 KJV)
Grieving is something that happens to all who love and have lost a loved one to death as Our Awesome God knew it would. So grieving is a common human occurrence that we will all experience if we live long enough. How we are able to overcome it is important. Even Jesus Christ wept and mourned when His friend Lazarus died (Matthew 23:37-39) and He saw other people crying for Lazarus.
The attitude you have about grieving is important. We should realize that grieving is a natural response to the pain and loss we are experiencing. It is also true that grieving has the purpose of refreshing our attitude toward life and living. We need to keep in mind our grieving should be only for a time, it is temporary, as the purpose is met and then we consider the benefits for the person if they were a Christian (Psalm 30:5). There is an end to mourning, but we sometimes feel that we still have a vacant spot in our lives where that person resided while on earth. Prayerfully we will walk and talk with them in heaven with Our Awesome God.
One of the most important parts of grieving is telling Our Awesome God about it. God created us, He understands us (Psalms 139:2) and He loves us. When we talk to Him, we open our minds to the truth of His love, His faithfulness, His control of all things and that He does all things for our ultimate good.
There is another part of the grieving process which we need to help us overcome and that is sharing our grief with others. This is where Christ's church members can help. Read Galatians 6:2 and Romans 12:15. The ones grieving may feel that no one can grieve the way they are do... just ask some of them about their worst loss and how they felt. If you shun others while grieving you increase your feelings of isolation and misery. It is healthier to share our memories with Our Awesome God and carefully chosen others because it lessens our grief.
