Marriage and the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit and Marriage
Eph 5:17-28 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.  (18)  And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, (19) speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,  (20)  giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,  (21)  submitting to one another in the fear of God.  (22)  Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.  (23)  For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.  (24)  Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.  (25)  Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, (26) that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, (27) that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.  (28)  So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. NKJV
I like lists.  I have always found it amusing to make various lists especially on long flights or waiting in airports.  One of my favorites down through the years is a list of things that I cannot put off until heaven.  I can wait till the Millennium to be a tourist.  The Holy Land tours don’t have a great attraction unless I am needed to teach or preach, but it seems that there are a list of better teachers and preachers lined up for those jobs.  A couple of years ago in Cusco, Peru with Robert there was an opportunity to visit Machu Pichu, an Inca temple that is famous around the world.  I could visit that or teach in three church meetings that day.  My choice was easy because I cannot change lives in heaven but by teaching the bible I can here and now.
Things I can’t do in heaven
  1. Teach the Word and see Christians grow.
  2. Abstain from sin (there is no sin there)
  3. Preach the gospel to the lost.
  4. Fellowship with Jesus in His suffering
  5. Demonstrate God’s love to my wife for there is no marriage in heaven.

  1. The Spiritual dynamic of marriage.
    1. The submission of equals. Ephesians 5:21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.
    2. ὑποτάσσω hupotassō Thayer Definition: to arrange under, to subordinate
    3. Stevens’ definition: to voluntarily, joyfully subordinate my will and desire to someone else’s
    4. Song of Solomon 4: My Sister my Spouse
    5. Psalm 104:30 You send forth Your Spirit, they are created; And You renew the face of the earth.
    6. John 14:26, 15:26, 16:7 The Holy Spirit is sent. By the Father and the Son.
    7. The Spirit is not testifying of Himself.  John 15:26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
    8. Joyful enthusiastic submission to another believer is a sign of spiritual maturity not a sign of weakness.
  2. Spiritual maturity in marriage
    1. Verses 18-23 is one sentence in the original language.  Being filled with the Spirit means both submission and love exists in full spiritual measure.
    2. Christian marriage is to be a prophetic sign of Christ taking His bride to His Father’s house.  It is a sign of His coming again to the lost world just as communion is to believers.
    3. Christian Spirit filled marriage is a gospel message greater than John 3:16
    4. The husband’s main concern is help his wife become more spiritual
    5. The wife’s main concern is to follow God’s authority as it comes through her husband.
  3. One Spirit:  1Corinthians 6:17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.
    1. Two wills become one
    2. Emotions flow together
    3. Spirits joined by being controlled by the Spirit
    4. Personalities fuse into one greater than the sum of both
    5. Twice as much
      1. The Spiritual Gifts
      2. Intelligence
      3. View points
  4. Biblical keys to a Spiritual partnership
    1. Serving one another: John 13:14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.
    2. Defer to one another’s needs and desires: Romans 12:10  Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;
    3. Mutual submission
    4. Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.
    5. Acceptance of Roles ( Areas of Responsibility)
